Drax customers save 2.8 million tonnes of CO2
8th November 2021
During the last reporting period of April 2020-March 2021, Drax customers saved over 2.8 million tonnes of CO2 through their electricity supply alone.
We supply all customers with renewable-source energy as standard. According to Ofgem, the average fuel mix across all UK suppliers is just 38% renewable energy.
On a typical supply, a business customer would rack up 182 tonnes of carbon per GWh of energy use.
Thanks to choosing Drax, our customers saved exactly 2,850,666 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Last year, we supplied a total of 15.6 TWh of electricity to over 165,000 businesses and organisations across the UK, all from renewable sources. So, not only can our customers report zero carbon emissions for their purchased power (Scope 2 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol), they’re safe in the knowledge that they’re supporting in the UK’s decarbonisation efforts.

Beyond electricity supply
But the good news doesn’t stop there. We’re not just an electricity supplier; we’re also a partner. Through our range of services - including fleet electrification, asset optimisation, and renewable power purchasing - we’re supporting our customers in their own Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals.
Driving down fleet emissions
SES Water was our first electric vehicles (EV) customer, and in their first phase trial converted 10 vehicles in their fleet to electric alternatives. This small step is saving the utilities company 43 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Curbing coal with optimisation
And our Electric Assets teams is helping Drax customers support the UK’s decarbonisation journey, too. As a customer for over a decade, Sundown Products recently opted into our optimisation offering. Not only are they saving £35,000 a year by being more flexible, but they’re also scheduling their operations to support the grid at times of system stress.
By turning down at times of demand, Sundown Products and our other Electric Assets customers are helping prevent the need for coal or other carbon intensive energy sources in the energy system.
Boosting renewable self-generation
As well as supplying renewable source electricity, we buy renewable energy from over 2,300 independent generators across the UK. We partner with these generators, purchasing their power and providing a route to market. Ashby Farms is one of those, installing a solar array in 2011 and expanding to include a wind turbine in 2014.
By partnering with independent generators, we’re giving businesses an extra revenue stream while further increasing the number of renewable sources contributing to the UK energy system.
At Drax, we’re committed to a lower carbon, lower cost energy future. Get in touch to find out how we can support your organisation in its own net zero journey.
