Drax exceeds Ofgem smart meter targets again
We’re delighted to announce we’ve exceeded Ofgem’s smart meter installation targets for the second year running. And we aim to do it again in 2025.

We installed an above-target surplus of 570 meters in 2023, and last year’s over-achievement totalled 1,042 meters. For more details, see our website for the smart targets/performance table.
These figures reflect the profile of many of our supply customers – large-scale industrial and commercial entities with multiple and/or complex sites. We’re working in partnership with each one to fully understand their unique portfolio and then help them convert to smart.
In doing so, we continue to support their journeys to net zero. We also offer support via a range of services including electric vehicle infrastructure and asset optimisation solutions.
A bonus of our smart meter installation work is that we’re helping to speed up the transition to a decentralised and decarbonised smart energy grid that makes the country more energy efficient.
For example, technological advances in automation and energy storage should boost the network’s ability to maintain the balance between supply and demand. Balancing becomes harder as we transition to an increased reliance upon wind and solar, which are renewable yet intermittent energy sources.
The industry hopes the smart grid will both recognise and rectify imbalances more quickly than the existing, conventional network – so that organisations (and households) have power when they need it.
