Global Switch secures long-term renewable electricity agreement with support from Drax Energy Solutions
Global Switch has secured a new long-term renewable electricity agreement with support from Drax Energy Solutions, as data centre operators continue to look for greater certainty over energy costs and supply.
The 10-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA), which begins in January 2027, will see Drax ‘sleeve’ – act as intermediary between the generator and the customer - 55GWh of baseload solar power each year for Global Switch. The agreement is expected to account for around 30% of the company’s total UK electricity demand.It is the second renewable power agreement Drax has supported for Global Switch. Combined, the two CPPAs now cover more than 70% of the company’s UK electricity use, of which 100% is renewables-backed.
The agreement comes as demand for data processing, cloud computing and digital infrastructure continues to grow, increasing pressure on data centre operators to secure reliable electricity supplies while managing exposure to volatile wholesale energy markets.
CPPAs are increasingly being used by businesses to provide longer-term cost visibility and support renewable electricity procurement.
