The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) switch off
On 30 June 2025, the BBC are planning to switch off the mast that controls when RTS meters switch between peak and off-peak times. The RTS switch off is an industry driven change. After the mast switches off, RTS meters may not be able to switch between rates. For example, if your business has a day and a night meter, the meter could stay on the higher rate all the time. This change could also affect the ability to access and control their hot water and heating systems. As such, it’s important that all customers with an RTS meter exchange their meter.
We’re offering all customers with an RTS meter a meter that will send their meter readings automatically at no additional cost.
What is the RTS?
The RTS uses a radio signal to instruct older electricity meters when to switch between peak and off-peak rates. Some traditional multi rate meters use RTS as it supports those using electricity for heating and hot water. This includes electric storage systems, panel heaters and immersion heaters in water tanks.
The RTS commenced in the 1980s and is now at the end of its operational life as the equipment to deliver the radio signal is too old to support any more.
How do I know if I have an RTS meter?
We’ve contacted all our RTS customers through email, letter, and (if they have an account) messages on the My Drax Energy portal. If you’ve received a message from us but haven’t arranged to switch your meter yet please contact us.

An AMR or smart meter will give you the same functionality as your RTS meter. You’ll still be able to access your hot water and heating systems, and switch between peak and off peak rates.
As an added benefit, these meters will send us your meter readings automatically, and you’ll be able to see a more detailed analysis of your energy usage on the My Drax Energy portal.
You can find out more about smart meters on our smart meter page.
